The existing EMI facility required additional facilities in terms of upgrading the bedrooms in Phase 1 to include en-suites, and to facilitate the connecting corridor to Phase 2. Due to the site topography, the new extension in Phase 2 was created on the first floor, as part of a contemporary cantilever structure on columns. Close liaison with the Snowdonia National Park was undertaken to ensure the design criteria was met with regards to the planning policies. The extension included a spacious open plan living area with kitchen facilities, medical room and accessible toilet. In addition, a spacious and secure balcony area was provided from the living area, with a secured gate to the external ramp, accessing the rear of the site. The additional facilities at Bryn Blodau Residential Care Home was partly funded by an ICF grant from the Welsh Government.
During the construction works, the care home and the EMI Unit was able to function normally. The contemporary structure was built in steel frame with sfs (steel framing system) to the external envelope. The emphasis on the modern method of construction was to speed the construction process in order to reduce the construction period.
The building was cladded in Siberian larch, powder coated aluminium windows and doors, and sedum flat roof. The two dramatic end elevations are fully glazed to enable the residents to enjoy the scenic views and to enable daylight and natural ventilation to enter the building to help reduce the carbon emissions. New electrical and mechanical services were also installed, with new lighting, Easicheck emergency lighting system, Medicare nurse call control system, radiators, hot & cold water. Access to the outside is restricted to the secure balcony, which is covered with artificial grass to enable the care home to use the facility all year round. The remaining landscape has been kept to soft landscaping with its original topography intact to enhance the floating effect of the new structure.
The project demonstrates design capability within the health and residential sector. The successful implementation of the design was tailored specifically towards Care Standards Wales. This shows our understanding and expertise in the sector.
